NHK News Easy

NHK News Easy is a great site for improving your reading skill. It is written in plain Japanese with furigana.

If you add the link below as a bookmark in Chrome (it may work in other browsers - I do not know for sure) and run it while on an NHKEasy page (it also works with some other sites), it will hide the furigana until you hover over the word. I use this to force me to read what I can but I can still hover if I don't know a word OR just want to confirm I got it right.

javascript:(function(){var newcss="ruby rt{ display:none; } ruby:hover rt{ display:block; }";if("\v"=="v"){document.createStyleSheet().cssText=newcss}else{var tag=document.createElement("style");tag.type="text/css";document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(tag);tag[(typeof document.body.style.WebkitAppearance=="string")?"innerText":"innerHTML"]=newcss}})();

Some more detailed directions:

  • Right-Click on the toolbar and select bookmark manager

  • Open the folder you want the bookmark in (in my case I put it in the "Bookmarks Bar"

  • In the top-right, click ... and then "Add a new bookmark"

  • Put in any name you want ("Hide furigana" for example)

  • For URL, cut and paste the thing above

  • Save

  • Visit an NHKEasy page

  • Click your "Hide furigana" bookmark and the furigana should disappear until you hover over a word with the mouse
