ふるさと紹介 vol.2 熊本県 - Kumamoto Prefecture

ふるさと紹介の第二回目は九州は熊本です。

りえ先生が故郷の熊本県の魅力をたっぷり紹介してくれます。

うちも熊本に行ってみよごたる！

地図で日本を見ると、ほぼ四つの大きな“島”から成っているのが分かります。その中の一番南にある島が九州。そして、その九州のほぼ真ん中に位置するのが、私のふるさと熊本県です。美しい風景、伝統文化、そして数えきれないほどの伝統行事が、国内はもちろん世界各地から、たくさんの観光客を引きつけています。

九州の真ん中にある熊本県は、北から時計回りに、福岡県、大分県、宮崎県、そして鹿児島県にかこまれ、東側は、穏やかな有明海(ありあけかい)をはさんで、長崎県、佐賀県と向かい合っています。

「火の国」の名で知られる熊本のシンボルは、何と言っても世界最大級のカルデラを有する活火山・阿(あ)蘇(そ)山(さん)。圧倒的なスケールを持つ独特の景観は、訪れる人を魅了してやみません。その火山の恵みを受け、阿蘇山には黒川(くろかわ)温泉をはじめとする日本屈指の温泉群が並び、言うまでもなく、県が国内外に発信する熊

本観光PRの目玉となっています。

Kurokawa Onsen

熊本県が誇る景観は阿蘇山だけではありません。有明海の南西部に位置する天草(あまくさ)は、長崎県とひと続きの雲仙天草(うんぜんあまくさ)国立公園の中にあり、穏やかな海に120もの大小さまざまな島が点在する景勝地です。

16世紀、海路日本を目指したポルトガル人宣教師ルイス・アルメイダは、この地を訪れ、天草の島々にキリスト教と西洋文化が花開きました。しかしその後、徳川幕府の禁令により容赦ないキリシタン弾圧と抵抗の歴史が始まります。時を経て2018年、隠れキリシタンの里として知られる崎津教会のある崎津集落がユネスコ世界遺産に指定されました。天草は、今国際的にも新たな注目を集めています。

熊本県・肥後（藩政時代の地名）は、近代以前の日本史の足跡を訪ねたい歴史ファンにはお勧めの土地。

さて、熊本歴史スポットの筆頭と言えば、やはり熊本城。築城の名手とよばれる戦国武将・加藤清正公が1607年に完成させた熊本城は、その徹底した機能美と質実剛健な外観から、日本３名城のひとつに数えられています。しかしこの国宝・重要文化財も、2016年の「熊本地震」では大きな被害を受け、復旧作業は現在も進行中。今、その緻密な震災復旧プロジェクトを含めた新たな視点からの熊本城観光が続けられています。

日本古来の歴史的な仏閣、神社ばかりでなく、天草の崎津、大江教会など、ヨーロッパ伝来の文化・宗教も、熊本の地に歴史を刻んでいます。

肥後の時代からその優美な姿をとどめる日本庭園・水前寺成趣園（熊本市）、細川家筆頭家老・松井家の茶室・松浜軒(しょうひんけん)庭園（八代市）、やぶさめの奉納で知られる阿蘇神社（阿蘇市）、夏の夜を幻想的に彩る山鹿灯ろう祭り（山鹿市）など、熊本は、訪れるすべての人に古今東西に渡る魅力を見せてくれます。

Yamaga Lantern Festival

人口50万都市・熊本市には、老舗の寿司店や人気シェフが腕を振るう本格的な洋食店から、裏通りに軒を並べるラーメン店や居酒屋まで、ハイエンドから“B級グルメ”までの飲食店が、数多くそろっています。（注　珍味として知られる「馬刺し」は、まずは先入観を捨ててお試しあれ。熊本で、冷えたビールや球磨焼酎にぴったりの一品と言えばコレ！もはや知る人ぞ知るの域を越えた、ローカル発のデリカシー！）

熊本の魅力は、自然と歴史だけにとどまりません。西日本最大級の規模を誇るアーケード街（下通り・上通り）には、江戸時代に遡(さかのぼ)る老舗から個性派の小さなショップやカフェまで、幅広いジャンルの店舗が軒を連ね、そぞろ歩きするだけでもワクワク感満載。

人吉球磨地方で作られる「花(はな)手(て)箱(ばこ)」。平家(へいけ)の落人(おちうど)たちが都をしのんで作り始めたと言われます。

The Hanatebako, made in the Hitoyoshi Kuma area, is said to have first been made by surviving members of the Heike clan, nostalgic for the capital in Kyoto, after taking refuge in Hitoyoshi Kuma following their defeat at the hands of the Minamoto clan.

Located in the center of Kyushu, Kumamoto borders Fukuoka, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures and is located on the eastern side of the peaceful Ariake Sea, across from Nagasaki and Saga prefectures to the west.

The symbol of Kumamoto, known as the "land of fire” (火の国), Mt. Aso, an active volcano and one with one of the world’s largest calderas. The unique scenery, with its impressive scale, never ceases to charm visitors. With so much fire under the ground, it is little wonder that the prefecture boasts some of Japan’s best hot springs (温泉), including Kurokawa Onsen (黒川温泉). Of course, Kumamoto’s hot springs are prime advertisements for the prefecture, both within Japan and abroad.

But Kumamoto Prefecture boasts more than Mt. Aso alone. Amakusa, located in the southwestern part of the Ariake Sea, is part of the Unzen Amakusa National Park, which extends into Nagasaki Prefecture. It is a picturesque landscape of 120 islands – some large, some small – in the calm sea.

In the 16th century, the Portuguese missionary Luis de Almeida visited this area in sailing for Japan. Christianity and Western culture then blossomed on the islands of Amakusa. Later, however, with Tokugawa Japan’s prohibitions, there started a history of relentless oppression of the Christians and opposition to that oppression. Many years later, in 2018, the village of Sakitsu, known for its hidden Christians, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amakusa is now attracting new attention from overseas.

For travelers seeking culture and history, the province of Higo (肥後), the prefecture’s name in pre-modern Japan, is a great destination.

At the top of the list of historical spots is Kumamoto Castle. Lord Kato Kiyomasa of Japan’s Warring States period, renowned for his skill in castle construction, completed Kumamoto Castle in 1607. A beautiful structure built to repel attackers; Kumamoto Castle is among Japan’s top three castles. Having suffered major earthquake damage in 2016, the castle - designated a national treasure and important cultural asset - is in the process of undergoing restoration. Along with the restoration project, Kumamoto tourism will continue from new vantage points.

In addition to ancient temples and shrines, Christian churches in Amakusa’s Sakitsu and Oe are some of the testaments to traditional European culture and religion in Kumamoto’s history.

From the Higo era, there still exists today one of Japan’s loveliest traditional gardens, Suizenji (Kumamoto); Shohinken (Yatsushiro), the Tea house of the Matsui clan who served as key retainers to the Hosokawa clan who ruled the province; Aso Shrine (Aso), known for its demonstrations of horseback archery; and the entrancing night-time dances at the Yamaga Lantern Festival (Yamaga). From East to West, both old and new, the prefecture has something for everyone.

Kumamoto, the prefecture’s sophisticated capital of over half a million residents, offers visitors both haute cuisine and popular fare, from sushi and Western dishes in high-end restaurants to inexpensive noodles and pot-stickers in relaxed ramen shops. (Note: There is also a rare delicacy known as “basashi.” To enjoy it, please leave your preconceptions at the door. This is the one dish that goes together with a chilled beer or some Kuma Shochu! It is a local delicacy whose reputation has spread beyond those in the know in Kumamoto!)

Kumamoto’s charms do not end with nature and history. In the Shimotori and Kamitori Shopping Arcades, the most extensive shopping arcades in western Japan, visitors enjoy going in or simply strolling past the wide variety of businesses found there, from traditional shops dating to the Edo Era to distinctive small shops and cafes.
